Scarcity: A Large Part of Every Day Life

Hour 3
Scarcity effects everyone every day of their lives.  This is because of simple human nature. What we want, we get and what we can’t get we want even more.  Let’s start with a statement that has no argument.  Everything has cost.  Every decision has a price to it.  This is not always money.  A person could lose something simple, like for example, an ice cream cone, because they decided to stop suddenly, or they could lose something that money cannot buy, like friendship for instance.  The statement "Everything has cost" sets up the statement "People choose for good reasons".   This statement means that the people know that their decision will cost them something and if they choose to pay the price for their decision, it’s for a good reason.  The word economize shines out in this statement.  Economize means that people choose what they believe has the best combination of cost and benefits.  For example,  riding a motorcycle gives a person the feeling of freedom and serenity, while the costs of safety hazards the bike may bring effects a person’s decision of whether or not they would like to ride.
"Economic systems influence people’s incentives and choices" and "Choices made today influence what happens tomorrow".  These two statements go hand in hand when it comes to this situation, something I like to call "The 4 largest scarcities of the 21st century".  They are; Overpopulation, Deforestation, Water Scarcity, and Famine.  First is overpopulation.  Global population now approaches 5.9 billion.  Last year we grew by almost 80 million people and 3 billion young people are entering their reproductive years.  That’s equal to the world population in 1960.  The choices made by us now concerning family size will have an effect on the world tomorrow.  Second is Deforestation.  600,000 ...
