in hospitals.  A major

accomplishment by Whoopi, was making millions of people laugh.  Making people

laugh is what Whoopi does best and she uses this talent to aid people all over the world.
At the  age of eight, Caryn Johnson, Whoopi’s original name, was performing with the
Children's Program at the Hudson Guild and the Helena Rubinstein Children's Theatre in

her drug habits.  Whoopi picked up and left for a planned week long trip to San Diego  with her
daughter Alexandrea.  Her week long trip turned into a  6 year stopover.
While in San Diego, Whoopi helped found and  appeared in the San Diego Repertory
Theatre's productions of Brecht's Mother Courage and Marsha Norman's Getting Out. Most
importantly, her comedic skills were honed with an improv group called Spontaneous

Combustion. This is when Whoopi came up with her stage name, Whoopi Cushion.  After taking
the advice from her mother, she changed Cushion to Goldberg.
Later, Whoopi packed her bags ,tagged "The Bay or Bust" and headed to San Fransisco
Once
she arrived, Whoopi joined the Blake Street Hawkeyes Theatre in Berkeley, partnered with

quickly being paid off.  While performing Spook Show at the Dance Theatre Workshop in New
York, she was discovered by director Mike Nichols, who lead her breakthrough solo
Broadway production in 1984. It was an evening of original material, written and created by

Alice Walker's The Color Purple, a performance that earned her the Best Actress Golden Globe,
an Academy Award nomination, and the NAACP's Image Award for Best Actress in a Motion
