     What management, organisation and technological issues are raised by employee monitoring.


The management issue raised includes that of employee comfort in the working environment.The constant
surveillance of employees could leave many wondering if their quality of work, integrity and
trustworthiness is in question. This inevitably leads to them feeling demoralised, trapped and stressed and
one way to deal with these feelings is usually to lash out on those in a supervisory or management position.
The threat of possible sabotage, go slow or a strike by workers becomes very relevant and management is
left with trying to find a solution to this issue before it affects productvity.

From the organisational and technological point of view, these communication networks have the
capability to link employees, suppliers and customers globally, and were introduced to increase the
company’s market share, productivity and naturally their profitability . If however, employees resent the
constant monitoring or feel that it is harmful to their personal or psychological well being then productivity
will fall and the company will lose money.


b).     Do you think management should have the right to monitor employees using      networks? Why
or why not ?

It is in a company’s best interest to review or monitor employees using networks. If the company owns the
equipment and pays for the network, that asset belongs to the company and therefore it does have a right to
look and see if people are using it for purposes other than running the business. One should not feel that
their privacy is being invaded as they are using the company’s equipment on  the company’s time.
