Hong Kong

Physical
     Hong Kong is a territory that has 236 islands and an area of mainland that borders the southwest
coast of China.  Hong Kong covers about 386 square miles.  It has many contrasts.  Such as:  high rise
buildings, and busy streets.  And there are country sides with very few people at all.  Hong can has very
few lakes or large rivers.  But it has a deep natural harbor, that is one of the best in the world.  The name
"Hong Kong" means "Fragrant Harbor."  Land is the best natural resource Hong Kong has, even though it
is small.  It's best resource is it's natural trading and fishing.  The climate in Hong Kong is much like ours,
but they have rainy summers and warm winters.  They also have big typhoon, which are big winds that
form in the North Pacific or in the South or East China seas.  The major areas of Hong Kong are Kawloon,
Aberdeen, and the New territories.  Hong Kong has one of the highest population densities in the world.  
The population there is about 6 million people.

Political
     The governor is Hong Kong's chief official.  There is also an Executive council which make the
policies.  Next is the Legislative counsel which makes laws and controls money.  The day-to-day running
of Hong Kong is the duty of the urban council.  The council has 30 members, with 15 appointed and 15
elected by the people.  Next are the district boards.  The boards were set up to let the residents have some
say in their local area.


History
     European traders arrived in Hong Kong in the 1500's.  In 1842 the treat, Nan King gave the island
of Hong Kong to the British.  In 1860 Kaw loon and stone cutters Island were added to the colony.  In
1898, England was given a 99-year lease, from China for the main land and island region called the New
Territories.  Hong Kong was captured by the Japanese in 1941, but he British preoccupied it in 1945.  
Many refugees from the mainland come to Hong Kong after the communists took over China.  In 1962 as
many as 17,000- refugees a month, fled to Hong Kong from Chin...
