Gangsters Now Vs. Gangsters in the past

This paper will discuss how the media's portrayal of gangsterism influences society.

THe media - television, radio, and newspapers, is the worlds' most powerful means of communication. THe media has a strong impact on our lives. In many cases , what we see in the media is not the truth. What they show is one sided- they tell what they feel is the most important. Society is being brainwashed by what they see on television, hear on the radio and read in the newspaper.

Both the gangsters of the past, and todays gangsters - gangsta rappers, can be viewed in both a negative and positive light. Since power, money and success are all values that people strive for - many see thenm as idols. But many are against what they feel gangsters are trying to promote - Crime.

Recently gangsta rap has been playing a large role in our society. Many people feel that all gangsta rappers do , is glorify violence, rap with obscene lyrics , and totally degrade women where they are almost always always portrayed as uneducated and highly promiscuous. But more and more of the teenage population are enjoying the music and helping the sales increase. Many children look at the rappers as role models and many imitate what they see.

All we know about todays gangsters is what we are taught by the media.THe gangster image of today has been villianized by the media and the mass society. But what the media doesnt realize, is that even tought they are trying to portray gangsters in a negative way, all of the attention that they are giving the gangster - glorifies the criminal's life.

Many rappers argue that gangsta rap is honest, and reports what they see in their life - their past, present , and future. Even though rap music attempts tp define black culture, racism , and it educates us all on the inner city life, it is filling the heads if the tumed in children. Do they realize that violence sells in todays society?

Since the 1920's gangster, guns andcrime have always held a fascination for the Americans. Many idolized gangsters like AL CApone, and Charles "lucky" Luciano. They were making millions during the Prohibiton Era, running an illegal underground liquor trade and gambling. Al Capone  in particular was a murderer, pimp, extortionist, and bootlegger , but that did not turn the public off. THe media helped influence the people's love for him . THey were fascinated by all that he did. all of the violence and the crime. Capone was seen in the company of movie stars...
