PYTHAGORAS LIFE

Most knowledge of Pythagoras and his work comes from his followers, the Pythagoreans.  This is because none of his writings survived.
Pythagoras was born in 580 BC on the island of Samos.  Pythagoras spent his years traveling in search of wisdom and knowledge.  He settled in Crotona, a Greek colony in southern Italy.
Pythagoras was known as “the father of math and music” by his disciples, the Pythagoreans.  They were inspired by his teachings, and they considered him a demigod.
The Pythagoreans met in secret to discuss mathematical discoveries, findings, and secrets.  Only members of the Pythagorean society were admitted to the secret meetings.
The emblem of the Pythagoreans was the pentagram.  Each member had one engraved in his hand.  Pythagoras discovered that the pentagram was filled with mathematics.  The first two shorter lines exactly equaled the third.  The second and third line exactly equaled the fourth.

The Pythagoreans held strong beliefs.  They were devoted to the reformation in politics, moral, and social life.  They were very religious, and believed in transmigration of souls.  Pythagoreans followed moral and dietary practices, to purify their souls.  They were also extremely skilled mathematicians.
The Pythagoreans influenced early geometry. Pythagoras discovered the formula for the Pythagorean theorem.  They were the first to teach that the world was round.

The brotherhood’s involvement in the politics of Cotona resulted in the suppression of the Pythagoreans.  Pythagoras was in exile, so he relocated to Metopontom.  Pythagoras lived the rest of his days there, until he died in approximately 500 BC.  Pythagoras is mostly credited for his impact on music, his ideas on astronom...
