Romeo and Juliet

By examining William Shakespeare’s plays Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, and Much Ado
About Nothing, one can formulate an idea of his philosophy of marriage.  Through recurring events
presented in these three works, you can infer that he has distinct opinions of matrimony.
     One theme in Shakespeare’s plays is that of love at first sight.  This phenomenon occurs to both
Romeo and Juliet and Hero and Claudio in Much ado About Nothing, who were both eventually married.  
Romeo and Juliet were instantly attracted to one another from the moment they first noticed one another at
the Capulet’s party.  In Hero and Claudio’s case, they fell in love when Don Pedro’s army first entered her
father’s village.
     For Portia and Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice and  Benedick and Beatrice in Much Ado
About Nothing, marriage came only after they received some help.  Portia’s suitors had to take place in a
very risky game to gain her hand in marriage.  Because she had already fallen in love with Bassanio, she
hinted at the correct choice by giving him clues in a song, which led him to choose the winning one.  
Beatrice and Benedick acted as if they truly disliked one another.  However, several of their friends and
family realized that they really would make a good couple, so they tricked them into getting together and
then married.
     While Shakespeare acknowledges the somewhat simpler aspects of marriage, he also recognizes
that sometimes love involves complications and sacrifice.  Romeo and Juliet and Lorenzo and Jessica in
