Black Panthers

          Introduction

     Called  "the  most  dangerous  and  violence  prone  of  all  extremist  groups"  by
the  F.B.I,  called  nothing  but  a  bunch  of  anti-government,  communist,  copkilling
racist  thugs  by  mainstream  America,  the Black Panthers  were  undoubtedly  one  of
the  most  controversial  and  uncompromising  radical  groups  of  the  60's-70's  era  civil
rights  groups.  Though  it  is  true that  the  Black Panthers  were  a  Marxist-communist
group  that  favored  violent  and  swift  action  to achieve  social  and  political  goals
much  of  there  lesser  known  ideas  and  programs  such  as  the  free  health  clinics  and
free  breakfast services  they  started  and  ran  have  been  all  forgotten  and  replaced
with  lots  of  negative  stories,  some  true  though  many  misconceptions.

Early  History  of  the  Black  Panthers

     The  Black  Panthers  were  founded  on 1966  by  Bobby  G.  Seale  and  Huey  P.
Newton  in Oakland  California  as  a  community  action  semi-militant  group  that  urged
blacks  to  educate  and  arm  themselves.  They  were  originally  called  the  Black
Panthers  For  Self  Defense,  though  the  self  defense  was  later  dropped.  They  were
originally  a  black  rights  group  that  taught  blacks  that  they  had  the  legal  right  to
arm  themselves  and  to  fight  police  brutality.  But  there  thoughts  that  the  blacks
problems  were  not  only  a  racial  issue  but  also  a  political  and  social  issue  and  that
the  best  way  to  achieve  political  and  social  goals  was  through  violence  later
turned  them  into  a  socialist  militant  group.

      On  October  of  1966  the  Black  Panthers  made  up  a  sort  of  constitution  in
which  they  put  their  beliefs  and  rules.  It  was  divided  into  two  main  sections,  one
was  tiled  "What  We  Want  and  What  We  Believe  In," the  other  was  simply  named
"Rules  of  the  Black  Panther  Party."
     The  first  section  titled  "What  We  Want  and  What  We  Believe  In,"  was
often  referred  to  as  the  ten-point  program.  It  contained  ten  demands  that  the
Black  panthers  believed  the  American  government  not  only  should  but  must  grant.
The  section  also  contained  a  two  paragraph  speech about  the  parties  view  on  what
a  government  is  and  what  it  should  do.  The  ten  demands  are  in  shortened
versions:  we  want  freedom;  we want  full  employment  for  our  people;  we  want  an
end  to  the  robbery  by  the  whiteman  of  our  black  community;  we  want  decent
housing;  we  want  education  for  our  people  that  exposes  the  true  nature  of  this
decadent  American  society;  we  want  all  black  men  to  be  exempt  from  military
service:  we  want  an  immediate  end  to  POLICE  BRUTALITY  and  MURDER  of
black people;  we  want  freedom  for  all  black  men  held  in  federal,  state,  county,
and  city  prisons  and  jails;  we  want  all  black  people  when  bought  to  trial  to  be
tried  in  court  by  people  of  their  peer  group  or  people  from  their  black
communities  as  defined  by  the  constitution  of  the  United  States;  we  want  land,
bread,  housing,  education,  clothing,  justice  and  peace,  and  as  our  major  political
objective,  a  United  Nations  supervised  plebiscite  to  be  held  throughout  the  black
colony  so  black  people  can  determine  their  future  in  this  nation.
     The  second  section  titled  "  Rules  of  the  Black  Panther  Party"  was  the
rules  that  all  Black  Panther  members  much  follow  if  they  want  to  be  a  member.
The  section  included  26  rules,  8  points  of  attention,  and  3  main  rules  of
discipline.
