2001 A Space Odyssey

Introduction
This story takes us all the way to Saturn and finally to another Universe. Written by Arthur C. Clark in 1968 , this
man is a great writer . He originally wrote this story as a friendīs request , Stanley Kubrik , who had asked him for
ideas to make a movie . Later on Arthur C. Clarke made some alterations from the original story , and published it.
ABOUT ARTHUR C. CLARKE
Born at Minehead, Somerset in 1917: educated at Huish's Grammar School, Taunton. Entered H.M. Exchequer &
Audit Department in 1936, then served in the RAF. While running the prototype GCA (Ground Controlled
Approach) radar, he developed the basic theory of Communications Satellites, and published it in 1945. Since 1954
his interest in underwater exploration has taken him to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia and the Indian Ocean, and
he is now a director of the Colombo-based Underwater Safaris.
He has published more than seventy books and made many appearances on Radio and TV, most notably with Walter
Cronkite on CBS during the Apollo missions. His 13-part "Mysterious World" and "Strange Powers" TV
programmes have been seen worldwide.
In 1989 H.M. the Queen awarded him a CBE for "services to British cultural interests in Sri Lanka." On returning to
UK in 1992 for his 75th birthday celebrations, he was made the first Freeman of his home town, Minehead. He was
nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994.
The story takes place in the beggining of humanity in Africa , to the Moon and space. The main characters are
MoonWalker , Dr. Floys , HAL , Bownman and Poole
Body
The story starts out in Africa , when man-apes were facing hard time . They were constantly in danger , savage
animals , drought , etc. , so they were not flourishing. One late afternoon as they came back from hunting
MoonWalker saw this crystalline monolith , a rectangular slab three times his height and very narrow , he licked it in
order to see if it was edible and after realizing there was no nourishment there he left. Some days after this it started
illuminating , it hipnotized them and without them knowing it gave them the answer for survival. The next they saw
a pig and for the first time killed it to eat it , at last they would not starve.
So time went by and the human race evolved not knowing of this happening . It was the year 1999 and the world had
evolved . There were trips to the Moon and Mars. For weeks all transmition from the Moon had been shut down and
no civilians knew the reason. Dr. Floyd was requested to go , without knowing what it was all about he took off . He
got there and they started explaining , a crystalline monolith had been found deep down in one of the Moonīs craters
, and they expected him to help them out in finding out who had put it there. It had been there for over 3 million
years but no one knew of its existence , and it had been made by some intelligent being because that symmetry had
almost no chance of having been created just by chance . Dr. Floyd and 6 more scientists which resided on the Moon
, went down to see the monolith . They got there , but it was hard to see because of the lack of light , but this did not
last long , for the sunlight would not take long to illumi!
nate the whole place . This was the first time the monolith was exposed to light , suddenly back at the Moon station
the computers detected a strong magnetic field .

The existence of the monolith was classified and therefore only a few, from which they needed to help on the
research of the monolith were told .
So Discovery , a spaceship , was sent on a mission from Earth to Jupiter to Saturn which was calculated to take 7
years . Once the mission was over Discovery II would pick them up to go back home. There were 5 astronauts in the
ship and HAL , the computer . Two of them , Frank Poole and Dave Bownman, would take the ship to Saturn and
meanwhile the other three would be unconscious until they reached the planet . But the two on command were told
this was a mission...
