Greece

     This project was chosen for a number of reasons. One reason
is the heritage of one member of our team. Another reason for
choosing this particular project, is that we are both interested
in the subject. We had some resources that may not have been
available to most others in this class. This report will cover
how this small country, with poor geography, little in the way of
resources, and inadequate communications, became the most
powerful empire of it's time.
     The mountains of Greece were very important to the ancients.
All large cities were located next to or very close to mountains.
This was due to the ease of defending a high place (acropolis).
All major cities of the time, had an acropolis, or high city that
they went to in times of war. A traveler in Greece, even today,
will notice acropolae on many hills near cities and towns.
Probably, the most famous is the Athenian Acropolis.
     The ancient (and even modern) Greeks were a seafaring
people. They derived most of their living from sea trade and
fishing. This is not surprising, because most of Greece is
surrounded by the sea, or made up of many islands. The
Mediterranean Sea lies to the south, the Aegean to the east, and
the Ionian to the West. Besides relying mainly on the sea for
food, the Greeks also grew grapes, grain, and olives.
     Between 2500 and 1200 B.C. the Minoan civilization thrived
on the island of Crete. Crete is the largest of the Greek
islands, covering approximately 3,327 square miles. They founded
one of the most brilliant and advanced civilizations known to
that time. Mythology and history blended in the culture of the
Minoans. King Minos was the king in Knossos, where the legendary
minotaur lived. In Minoan culture, the bull was highly revered.
It was so highly revered that the horns of the bull became the
symbol of the Minoans. The Minoan civilization was essentially
wiped out by a major volcanic eruption. Even Minoan colonies on
other islands were destroyed by this eruption.
