Part I
In Detroit; the motor city capital of the world General Motors signed a huge deal with Alcan, a Montreal based firm.  The deal entails buying aluminum from Alcan at more stable prices and to work with General Motors engineers to develop new uses of the lightweight metal in cars and trucks.  General Motors, in conjunction with Alcan hopes to produce cars and trucks cheaper and more energy efficient with aluminum.  Aluminum can cost up to three times as much as steel.  Another problem with aluminum that automakers faced was that prices can fluctuate wildly making it very tough for automakers to effectively plan pricing and production strategies.
The deal with Alcan ensures more stable and fair prices for General Motors.  This will enable General Motors to become more competitive with pricing their vehicles.
Alcan had this to say about the 10 year multi-billion dollar deal.  “The auto industry is a key strategic market for Alcan, and this arrangement with General Motors reflects our commitment to work closely with automakers on achieving stability of supply, price and product characteristics.”
