Christianity Since the dawn of Christianity, followers of the faith have sought salvation and redemption from God. Unlike these believers, Henrich Schutz (1585-1672) a composer during the Boroque period did not ask for redemption through his music. This is shown in the composition of a polychoral motet, Schutz’s Schwanengesang, or the Swan Song. Schutz’s life was full of unfortunate events. As a child, he was pressured throughout school to become well educated. He was successful in fulfilling this request throughout his younger education. His parents pushed Schutz into the University of Marburg to study law, but his passion was not in the profession of law, but rather the emotions of music. With his desire to study the arts, Schutz took the opportunity to study under Giovanni Gabrodi, a brilliant music teacher and composer of the time. After studying many years with Gabrodi, Schutz clutched a job offered by Johann Georg. Later, Schutz was able to be move his way up to elector of Georg’s chapel. From this point on Schutz’s life went on a decline. In the fall of 1625, Schutz suffered the first of what seemed to be a never-ending series of personal tragedies and hardships. After his wife died that fall, Schutz decided to give the care of his daughter up. He felt he could not care for them properly. Years later, his brother died and the children his brother had fell under the responsibility of Schutz. As soon as the death of his brother had seemed to fade, Schutz’s eldest daughter passed away. Throughout all these losses, Schutz was still able to compose multiple works. Schutz required to settle some personal bossiness back at his home after the death of his daughter and the result was his work in complete chaos when he returned. Ultimately Schutz retired his post as elector, but not after years of petitioning. At this same time his youngest daughter Eupharosina had passed away. Schutz’s last years were spent in an apartment, still composing pieces, but in a frail and weak state. The Psalm used in the Swan Song was translated into German. This affected the meaning of the piece in many ways. The original text of Psalm 119 as in all biblical texts was in Latin. Through the translation from Latin to German, Henrich Schutz is able to interpret and intertwine his feelings and emotions into the motet. T... This is ONLY a preview of the article.
