The Peregrine Falcon

     The Peregrine Falcon is one of natures’ swiftest birds of prey. It is noted for it’s
speed, grace, and aerial skills. The name comes from the Latin word Peregrines, meaning
Foreigner or Traveler.
     Peregrine falcons are medium-sized hawks with long pointed wings. Adults have
slate blue-gray wings and pale under sides; white faces, and large dark eyes. They have a
wing span of 40 in. The females are normally larger then the males.
     Peregrine Falcons live in all the continents except Antarctica, but are mostly
found along Mountain ranges, river valleys, and coast lines. They migrate great distances,
like from Alaska, Canada, and Greenland to Central and South America. Peregrines that
nest south of Canada migrate lesser distances or not at all.
     Peregrine falcons usually reach breeding maturity at 2 years of age. The male
arrives at the nesting site and begins a series of aerobatics displays to attract a mate. The
nest is usually a scrape or depression dug in gravel on a cliff ledge. Rarely a nest will be
in a tree cavity or an old stick nest. The average clutch of 4 eggs are laid in the spring,
hatching about a month later. The parents defend there nest with a vengeance, but may
abandon it if they are continuously harassed.
     Unlike many other birds, Peregrines have adapted well to urbanization. They will
often use Skyscraper ledges, tall towers, or bridges as nesting grounds. In 1988, 21
