Ho Chi Minh (Nguyen Tat Thanh) Ho Chi Minh’s real name is Nguyen Tat Thanh (1890-1969). He is the Vietnamese Communist leader and the principal force behind the Vietnamese struggle against French colonial rule. Ho Chi Minh was born on May 19, 1890, in the village of Kimlien, Annam (central Vietnam). The son of an official who had resigned in protest against French domination of his country. Ho Chi Minh had many other aliases such as: Ly Thuy, Vuong, and Tran; those names were not very well known. In fact, Ho Chi Minh was a real name of an old Chinese man who was believed to be a beggar with unlocated relatives. When he died, he left nothing but his identification card. Later, Nguyen Tat Thanh bought this document. Using identification cards of the dead was quite popular in Chinese outlaw society at that time. When Ho Chi Minh was arrested by the Chinese Kuomintang, he used this name - Ho Chi Minh. Ho Chi Minh attended school in Hue and then briefly taught at a private school in Phan Thiet. In 1911 he was employed as a cook on a French steamship (La Touche Treville) during his overseas trip from Saigon to marseilles, France and thereafter worked in London and Paris. During the period that he was on the ship he used the name Nguyen Van Ba, and when he got off he went back to the name Nguyen Tat Thanh. After World War I, using the alias Nguyen Ai Quoc (Nguyen the Patriot), Ho Chi Minh engaged in radical activities and was in the founding group of the French Communist party. He was called to Moscow for training and, in late 1924, he was sent to Canton, China, where he organized a revolutionary movement among Vietnamese exiles. He was forced to leave China when local authorities cracked down on Communist activities, but he returned in 1930 to found the Indochinese Communist party (ICP).
