In Cold Sassy Tree, the theme of human sexuality is well developed and thoroughly explored.  Olive Ann Burns develops this theme through the actions of Grandpa Blakeslee, Love Simpson, and Will Tweedy.

Grandpa's story of living with Granny but not having sex with her showed how a man's feelings can change when he is not allowed to have the sexual side of a marriage.  Soon he began to think of Granny as more of a sister or friend than as a wife.  Shortly thereafter he was vulnerable enough to fall in love with Love Simpson when she came to work in his store with him.  Granny was not to blame for this, as she and Grandpa both were victims of circumstance.
