John Calvin ÿJohn Calvin was born into a middle class family in the early 1500's to Gerard Calvin and Jeanne Le Franc. His father was a lawyer for the Roman Catholic Church. His father’s relations to the church initiated John’s religious career. Calvin studied both theology and law and many different institutions in both America and Europe. By 1533, he had converted to Protestantism. In 1536, Calvin published a book describing his basic ideas on Religion called Institutes of the Christian Religion. This book presents the underlying beliefs of the futuristic Calvinists and the subsequent Presbyterians. Many of these beliefs are common beliefs of our own Catholic faith, yet some are contradictory to those of which we conform to today. The Calvinist religion is not based on a cardinal idea, such as the teachings of Aristotle. Rather they had many subordinate beliefs, all of the same importance. Many people have regarded predestination as the essential point of Calvin’s theology, or more recently, the sovereignty of God, and the divinity of Christ. This too is a similarity between present-day Catholicism and Calvinism. The Calvinist religion, similar to our own Catholic religion, regarded the bible as the basis of all Christian teachings. Calvin was very knowledgeable of the scriptures and often quoted them in his writings. He would relate the ideas in the bible to the present times. He would also search the bible as a text for parables and ideas that supported his own teachings. Catholics read and study the bible as a lesson to be learned not as a point to proven. The Catholic Church models itself as an institution. As an institution there is an existing hierarchy. In this hierarchy is a system analogous to that of the caste system. There are various ranks of priests that are separate from the layperson. Contrarily, the Calvinists believe in the priesthood of all believers.
