The 39th President of the United States

I.     "The president of the United States functions in many capacities:  head of state,
head of government, commander in chief of the armed forces, and leader of the
president's political party.  The president is thus the single most unifying force in a
political system in which power is highly dispersed, both within the government and
between government and the people"  (Grolier).  The president has been a very strong
leader in our country, in making decisions, to being a role model, for the interior of the
country and for the world to see.  Through the course of the short history of the United
States, we have had 42 presidents.  Each of these has had different outlooks, different
times, different problems, and most of all, significant changes throughout the course of
the years.  Jimmy Carter became our 39th president in 1977, amidst some great changing
times, with humans rights and technology.  He was later considered the transitional
president of the United States  (Hudson1).  Jimmy Carter rose in power very quickly, was
elected as president at a transitional period in the United State's history, and lost most of
his power very quickly.
Jimmy Carter's beginning was a very simple and typical "American style" start.
Jimmy was born James Earl Carter, Jr., on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia.  His
parents were James Earl Carter and Lillina Gordy Carter.  His family lived there for the
first three years of Jimmy's life, and then moved to Archery, Georgia, just outside of
Plains.  He lived there until he was seventeen years old, participating in the family's
peanut farm.  In the year of 1941, Jimmy graduated from high school, which wasn't
common for a farm boy at the time.  He then spent a year at Georgia Southwestern
College, then left for another year at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  After his
college education, Jimmy started his career in the military.  In1943, Jimmy enrolled in the
United States Naval Academy.  He continued at that school for three years, and then
became a commissioned officer.  He also married Eleanor Rosalynn Smith that year.
Then, in 1948, Jimmy went into Submarine School until 1952.  His father died, so Jimmy
went to take over the family's business  (Hudson).
II.     Jimmy Carter's political career began started very quickly in 1962.  He had lived a
normal life as a civilian from 1953 until 1962.  He was then elected to the Georgia state
senate in 1962.  He was also re-elected to this position in 1964.  He lost running for
Georgia's governor ship in 1966, but won it in the following election in 1970.  While still
in office, Jimmy decided he would take his turn to run for the presidency of 1976.  He
chose Walter Mondale to be his running mate and defeated Gerald Ford and Robert Dole
with an electoral vote of 297 to 241.  Jimmy served as the 39th president of the United
States until 1980 when he was defeated by Ronald Reagan  (Young Students 156-172)
(Grolier).
In 1972, Jimmy Carter took a big step in his life and threw his hat into the ring for
the presidential campaign.  He campaigned for four long years for the Democratic
presidential nomination.  In 1976, he established a commanding lead over other
candidates by winning the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary.  He
established a solid base in the South and among black voters and went on the win the
Democratic nomination.  For his running mate he chose a liberal, Senator Walter F.
Mondale.  Walter was a United States Senator from Minnesota.  He was previously
appointed Minnesota state Attorney General in 1960, by Governor Orville L. Freeman.
After four years as Attorney General, he then was appointed by Governor Karl F.
Rolvaag, to fill the position of a United States Senator that had been vacated by Hubert
Humphrey, who had been elected vice president of the United States.  He remained a
senator for about fourteen years.  As a senator, he was known for voting on bills such as
in favor for civil rights, consumer protection, education reform...
