Creative Writing Assignment Paul's Case "So Michael, how many points did you score in tonight's basketball game? My father asked. "Twenty-four!" I answered proudly. "Twenty-four, you should have been pushing at least thirty. I averaged thirty-two per game back when I was in high school." My feelings were shot, and my confidence taking a nosedive. My father has always been rough on me. Pushing me to my limits and setting a standard of expectation. However there are times when I feel he goes a bit too extreme, and because of that, our relationship may begin to fluctuate. I feel trapped and conformed, and often just want to live the way I want to live. I feel a craving to breakout, a desire to escape. This is why I feel a kinship to the character Paul in Willa Cather's "Paul's Case." Although there are many differences between my life and Paul's, there are also some parallels. I feel I have a respectful relationship with all of my teachers, classmates, and the people whom I interact. Paul on the other hand is lacking this security. This helps me be comforted when times are rocky between my father and I, which is how these two arguments relate to one another. There is also tension between Paul and his father, however Paul doesn't have the opportunity to turn to anyone when he and his father so often contradict eachother. I consider myself to be much more greatful for what I do have in life than Paul is. Paul despises his day to day life and everything in it, symbolized by Cordelia Street, his home road. I know the one thing that comforts me the most when I have the desire to escape is the warming love of a figure I feel I need more than anything. In "Paul's Case," Willa Cather develops the idea that without meaningful relationships, one may be driven to the desire to escape, escape even their own devastating existence. Paul has no one to turn to for comfort, which may have been a key element as he determined his final destiny. First of all, I feel I can turn to my teachers, fellow classmates, friends and others, for help or guidance. Paul is disturbed by his teachers. We can see how Paul feels his teachers treat him with disrespect by reading the narrators descriptions on page one-seventy-one, "…and they fell upon him without mercy, his English teacher leading the pack." This makes it sound like Paul is a helpless victim to a pack of wolves who are attacking a vulnerable sheep. However Paul's teachers are trying to discipline him. To discover Paul's non-existent compassion toward his teachers, we can read page one-seventy-nine where it says he felt an, "itch to let his instructors know how heartily he despised them." Plain and simple, Paul has no respect for his teachers; therefor his relationship with them is very poor. Paul's smiley, almost cocky facial expression suggests he felt superiority over his classmates. He wanted everyone to realize, as he thought he had, that he did not belong among them. We see evidence of this on page one-seventy-nine, "He could not bear to have the other pupils think, for a moment, that he took these people seriously…". His job at Carnegie Hall helped him to get this message across, as we read that he brings in autographed photographs of the performers that happen to be the topic of the day. This explains his uncaring attitude toward school. He is also lacking to be understood by his fellow employees, as expressed on page one-seventy-three, where it says, "telling him that he was crazy, they put him down on the floor and sat on him." Paul cannot turn to these people either. Because none of the mentioned persons can help Paul, he manipulates himself into a desire to escape. One other very important relationship that Paul is deprived of is that of a sincere and genuine relationship with his father. This is such a necessity for father's and sons. It remains this way because Paul and his father are at completely opposite ends of the social spectrum. His father valuing hard work, dedication, and little change judging by the description...
