CHAPTER 11 CASE STUDY
1. Would you be concerned about Kim’s growth? I would need further information regarding this concern such as how much did Kim weigh at birth and what does she weigh now. Does the mother or father have heretical traits of being small in weight and height. I wouldn’t worry because the child is healthy at this time.
2. Kim’s mother wonders if she should provide foods from home for Kim because of her limited choices of food? I feel that the child will improve her eating habits because she will be around children in pre school who will be modeling good eating habits. The pre school staff will also be there to provide encouragement for the child to eat healthy. She will hopefully pick up on these habits which should in my opinion take care of the concern. I would wait a few weeks before offering food from home.
3. As a preschool director and teacher describe the strategies that your preschool might have in place to encourage Kim to try a wider variety of foods? I would use the concept of my game that I presented in class. I would use positive reinforcement to encourage the children to eat a variety of foods. I would document progress made and if the progress is good in this area I would reward the children with a field trip or ice cream party etc.
CHAPTER 13 CASE STUDY
1.See the growth chart in figure 13-4 based on her body mass index is M.L. at risk for becoming obese? I would be concerned because there has been a dramatic increase over the past few years in her weight in regard to the NCHS. I would be most concerned because this is a vital time for body image in young girl’s lives. I believe that intervention needs to take place for her physical and psychological health.
2. Is her nutrient intake appropriate for a 13-year-old girl? The foods in which the child eats are very similar to a teenage diet. I feel that there is too much fat in the diet, and the sugar content is high; in addition the times in which these foods are consumed are not good times in my opinion. The diet basically does not represent the major food groups or dietary guidelines.
4. How would you suggest she modify her food intake to increase her intake of nutrients and to reduce her current energy intake? I would use the game that I presented in class, because she would know what foods need to be consumed to create a balanced diet plus this child needs to exercise to increase her metabolism. She also needs to eat a balaced breakfast, lunch, and dinner and eat fruit for her in between snacks. I believe if she will consume 3 servings of meat product. Large quantities of fruits and vegetables, 6 servings of bread, cereal, rice, pasta group, and 3 dairy servings plus the ex...Read entire document
