Women such as Harriet Quimby, the first licensed women pilot, and Amelia Earheart, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, were unknowingly paving the way for other women, like Sally Ride, in the field of women in science and aeronautics.
     Sally Ride was born in Encino, California on May 26, 1051.  Science has always been present in Sally’s life. Her father, Dale, was a Political Science professor at the nearby University.  Her mother, Joyce, stayed home to raise Sally.  She attended Westlake High school and was a very aggressive athlete.  Her original intentions were to become a professional tennis player.  She even ranked on the junior tennis circuit.  However, her plans changed.  Her mom said, “She could not make the ball exactly where she wanted it.”  So she decided to go off to college.  At the age of twenty-seven she enrolled at Stanford University.  There she worked hard to obtain four degrees.  In 1973, she received her Bachelor of Arts in English and her Bachelor of Science in Physics.  In 1975 she received her Masters in Physics and a Ph.D. in 1978.
     In 1977 she responded to an ad in the Stanford University newspaper for NASA astronauts.  She was originally looking for postdoctoral work in astrophysics.  Previously, astronauts had always been military pilots, but now NASA wanted to hire scientists and technicians who could monitor the complex technology of the shuttle.  Prior to her application, no women had ever been accepted into NASA’s space program.  There were over 8,000 applicants for the thirty-five positions available.  1,251 of the 8,000 people who applied were women and only six were accepted.
Sally Ride was one of the six, although she didn’t go
into space right away.  Her first assignment with NASA
was On-Orbit Capsule Communicator (CAP-COM), or
mission control.  In August 1979, she completed her
training and education and was designated as a mission
specialist.  In this position Sally would learn about
future shuttle information, such as shuttle launching
and the shuttle systems.
In 1982, Commander Robert Crippen hand selected his crew for the launching of the Challenger, Sally Ride was included.  Fifty-seven men had gone into space from NASA’s program before Sally Ride.
