The Latvian-Russian Relations

Business Communications
Eva Ertmane

Everybody wants to be free, make their own decisions, be able to communicate freely, and most important, be in charge of their lives. However, sometimes it is not up to the individual persons to decide. I was born in Latvia when it was still under communist rule. I and my family, same as many other Latvians have seen and experienced what life is like under communistic form of government, being a prisoner in your own country.  Communism is a one way street that we had to follow no matter how hard it was. It is a dictatorship where you are told from the top how and what to do, and how everything is going to be. Can you call that a communication? It is obvious that the answer to this question is "no".  Talking and not being listened to is very difficult, but what is even harder, is not to be able to speak at all. As sad it is hundreds of thousands of people had to live that way for the most part of their lives.
Communism was a serious problem that has left even more serious consequences. Many were killed, many were hurt, and many will never recover.  Even though described as perfect form of government, communism has caused mare pain to so many absolutely innocent people than anything else. (Britanica)  I was also in Latvia 8 years ago when Latvia along with two other Baltic States, Estonia and Lithuania, regained their independence and became free countries once again.   The time goes by really fast, but even though Latvia has a democratic form of government, now all of the post-communism countries face more problems than ever. But if they overcome them, there will be prosperity and the countries will reach economic independence.  People cannot forget their history; they have to learn to stand up for their rights, which they were forbidden of for over a half of the century, and the main thing, to effectively communicate.  This is the one and only way too a successful well being of the whole country and it's people in the future.
In order to understand the current position of Latvia, it is necessary to know it's basic history.  December 25, 1991 is marked as the fall of the Soviet Era. This victory for Latvia and Latvian people did not come easy.  Latvia was a free country until 1940, when the Soviet Union annexed the all three of the Baltic States. (Kirckus, 1)  Those fifty years were especially hard for those who lived through this drastic change and deep down in their hearts believed that someday they would be free again. A war is the worst thing that can happen in any country, because not everybody is able to fight and there can never be two winners.  It brings the greatest pain into human lives. Since the communists occupied Latvia, the native people have been nothing but the second class citizens in their own country.  There is no other way to say it, now Russians were the rulers, who tried to destroy everything that was in their way and has been sacred to Latvians, like their beliefs, language, religion, and culture.  Even though Latvia was too small of a country to fight and win physically, they did fight for all of the things listed above.  They were forced to learn and speak Russian in their everyday lives, but they managed to keep their language.  They were forbidden to go to church, but they kept their faith and religion.  They had to obey and accept communism principles, but they still did not loose they high moral beliefs, responsibility, and hope for freedom and independence. Communist empire changed lives of millions of people, including many who had never lived in a communist country, but who have been touched by a Cold war. "Some were inspired to acts of greatness; others were driven to their deaths" and these horrible memories will never be forgotten. (Dobbs, 105)
Even though communism was a significant part of history and the lives of the people who were influenced by it, it is in the past, and it is time for the people of these countries to move on and to start on rebuilding their lives. It is not easy task to accomplish.  It...
