Term Papers on Aunt Karla
Aunt Karla "Hey Carrie" hollers my Aunt Karla, "c'mon over here for a sec." I walk over to where Karla is sitting, expecting another one of her far-out stories about ghosts, fairies, aliens, or maybe "little people" once again. "Now give me your hand." Rolling up my sleeve, I prepare myself for the worse. Over the years I have learned to expect anything from my "flake-of-an-aunt". A very open mind is essential to have any conversation with her. Once she taught me how to find the answers to all my questions. This was done by holding a string with a pendulum tied to the bottom. Even while holding the string as still as possible, it will rotate clockwise or counterclockwise by "itself". A clockwise rotation will mean yes, and a counterclockwise rotation will mean no. Aunt Karla swore this method worked, as she does for all her theories. My aunt takes my hand and looks carefully at it, as if it holds the key to my soul. "Well, well, well . . . " murmurs Karla. "What?" I ask. "You are a very quiet person," she looks up at me and smiles, "and you have a tendency to let people control you." "Well, like I didn't know that already." I say sarcastically. "But you have a very well balanced personality. You have an open mind, and you tend to go with the flow." she continues, "I can tell this because your index finger and thumb form a nice "L" shape when spread apart. If it was more of a "V" shape, than it would mean you are a rigid person, with a very narrow mind." "And. . . You know this just by looking at my hand?" I question. "I believe your hand can tell many things about a person. I'm not telling you what I already know, I am simply telling you what your hand says. I was a skeptic like you once." Karla explains. "What made you change your mind?" "Mainly through experimentation. The more hands I read the more of a believer I became. Also, I had my hand read by a palmist once. It seemed as if this palmist knew everything about me. She even told me of how poetry would play a significant role in my life; it would act as a sort of religion for me. And, it has. There's a poem by Kipling that I've known since I was a child. It seems there's not a day that I don't think of it. Even when I pray, I use that poem." says Karla. "Weird," was all I said. One Year Later " . . . It's called an I-Search," my English teacher, explains, "you have to think of a burning question that you've always wanted to know the answer to, and it would change your life if you knew the answer." What question would change my life if I knew the answer to it? I wonder. My mind goes blank. There's the obvious: what profession is the best for me? But, that idea is too ordinary. I need something different, a subject that is out of the norm. My mind jumps back to my conversation I had with my aunt about palmistry. Ever since she told me about her experiences with palmistry, I have wondered if it actually is as valid as she claims. Is palmistry substantial enough to be called a science? Or, is it merely another hoax designed to give people a feeling of security in life? My current opinion is that palmists just tell their participants what they want to know. Most palmists, I feel, are looking for money, and will do anything to get it. It doesn't take any wisdom, or "psychic powers", to predict things about a person, especially if the predictions are so general they could pertain to anybody. Another thing I wonder about is how there could be any science in palmistry. The idea that lines and bumps on someone's palm predicting things about him/her sounds absurd. But since there's so many people who believe in palmistry, it's hard for me to dismiss it as being a total hoax. Despite my criticisms, I am trying to teach myself to be open to all things. Finding out if palmistry is valid or invalid is important to me, but being able to exercise an open mind is more. Imagine where we would be if someone didn't doubt that the world was flat. What today is known to be true, can be proved false the next. This is why I am re... This is ONLY a preview of the article.
