Roger Bacon

Roger Bacon was an English Scholastic philosopher who studied geometry, music, and astronomy. He was born in 1214 and died in 1294. He was born in Ilchester, Somersetshire and he was educated at the Oxford and the University of Paris. It was at Oxford where he attained an interest in math and science. Upon his tenure at Oxford he joined a religious group called the Franciscans. The Franciscans were a religious order founded by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1208. They, as a way of life, devoted themselves to preaching and voluntary poverty.
Roger Bacon’s contributions to medieval society were his tremendous accomplishments in the field of science and mathematics. His most famous works were the Opus Maius (Great Book), the Opus minus (Smaller Work) and the Opus tertium (Third Work). He did this because Pope Clement IV had requested this because Bacon had written a letter to the pope asking for an encyclopedia of all the sciences worked by a team of collaborators, which was to be coordinated by the church. This happened because in medieval times the church was the most powerful ruler and everything had to go by it and be approved before anything could be done. Pope Clement IV did not receive a proposal like this before and thought that the encyclopedia of science already existed. So when the pope asked Bacon to see this encyclopedia Bacon could not disobey the pope and wrote these enclycopedia’s by himself. In the Opus maius he wrote down an astounding collection of ideas, with an example being a proposal for a telescope: -
For we can so shape transparent bodies, and arrange them in such a way with respect to our sight and objects of vision, that the rays will be reflected and bent in any direction we desire, and under any angle we wish, we may see the object near or at a distance ... So we might also cause the Sun, Moon and stars in appearance to descend here below...
I found this to be amazing as these ideas are so ahead of his time and the fact that he had come up of these ideas are simply amazing. The Opus Maius was an encyclopedia of all science, which included grammar and logic, mathematics, physics, experimental research, and moral philosophy. Some of the other theories of Bacon were that the Earth was a sphere and that one could sail around it. He found that with sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal, and a substance now known as gunpowde...
