The War of 1812

The War of 1812 is also referred as one of the “forgotten” wars of United States.  The War of 1812 was given this name because it ended like it started-in stalemate.  This war shouldn’t be forgotten, and The War of 1812 has great value and importance that has shaped American History.  The main cause of the war was the urge to uphold national honor and pride.  For once and for all, we were going to stand up to any foreign forces trying to strip us of our independence.  This view was shared among many colonists at that time. The inevitable cause of the war was due to Britain’s tyrannical pushing, American’s colonists for revenge, and, most importantly, to set straight their ambition to total independence.
     Even after the American Revolution, Britain has continually agitated the Americans by not withdrawing from the territories surrounding the Great Lakes.  This incident enticed Americans to get what they thought was theirs; therefore, Americans wanted the “complete” sense of independence rather than the British breathing down their backs.  America’s bitterness toward Britain started during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars.  The Continental System made Americans furious because America was a neutral country, and this system violated their trading rights with France and Britain.  Another discrepancy involved Britain claiming the right to take any British sailors on any American merchant ship, but, frequently, they would take Americans too.
     So the Americans had no choice but to change some economic policies due to the lack of British trade. In 1807, Jefferson was urged, after the firing of the British ship Leopard on the American ship Chesapeake, and Congress formed the Embargo Acts.  These plans were extremely devastating and didn’t change the economic woes due to the French and British.
     The Americans had endured enough.  The Congress in 1810 was consisted of members known as the War Hawks.  The War Hawks also had a great deal in causing the war, but the predominate cause was the unrest Americans had had taken from the British.  So on June 1, 1812 Americans declare war upon Britain, but Americans not knowing Britain had rescinded the “Orders in Council” which respected America’s neutrality.  The timing was too late, and the Americans were ready to go to war.
