Claudio

The play begins when a messenger delivers a letter to Leonato, the Governor of Messina.  The letter says that Don Pedro and his men will return that night from their victory in a military engagement.  Don Pedro does return that night, along with Claudio, Benedick, Balthasar, and Don John, Don Pedro's half brother.  The group is invited by Leonato to spend as much time at his estate as they wish, and Don Pedro agrees that they will spend at least a month there. Benedick and Beatrice, who both claim they will never marry anyone, then begin their verbal war almost immediately.
Claudio sees Hero, Leonato's daughter, and falls in love with her.  Benedick sees this, and since he is against marriage, tries to bring Claudio to his senses.  When that fails, Benedick tells Don Pedro.  Don Pedro tells Claudio that she is a good lady.  Don Pedro tells Claudio that he will talk to Leonato about Claudio marrying Hero, then disguise himself as Claudio, make her fall in love with him, and turn her over to Claudio.
Leonato's brother Antonio overhears part of this conversation, and goes to tell Leonato. However, Leonato does not get the information correct, and tells Leonato that Don Pedro is in love with Hero, not Claudio, and that he plans to tell her at the dance that night.  Leonato is slightly skeptical, but decides to prepare his daughter for it, if it does turn out to be true.
Meanwhile, Don John is complaining to his friend, Conrade.  Don John is upset, because after Don John rebelled against his brother, Don Pedro has put some restrictions on his freedom, but has forgiven him.  Rather than being grateful for this, Don John is resentful and wants to get back at his brother.  When Borachio comes in and announces that Claudio plans on marrying Hero, Don John decides to foil the marriage.  He thinks that since Claudio is held in such high esteem by Don Pedro, that an attack on Claudio will be as satisfying as an attack on Don Pedro.  Borachio and Conrade agree to help him.
Leonato has told Hero that Don Pedro might propose to her that night, and has prepared her for it.  That night all the men are masked, and all soon pair off with ladies except for Don John, Borachio, and Claudio.  Don John and Borachio know that the other man is Claudio, but they pretend to think he is Benedick.  They tell him that they heard Don Pedro swear his love for Hero, and that he plans on marrying her.
Claudio is then convinced that Don Pedro, not him, will be marrying Hero.  When Benedick comes and tells Claudio that Don Pedro has gotten Hero, Claudio is upset.  However, Don Pedro soon finds Claudio and tells him that he has won Hero in Claudio's name and that everything is arranged for them to be married.  With that settled, Don Pedro decides to try to make Beatrice and Benedick fall in love with each other.  Claudio, Leonato, and Hero all agree to help.
Since their first plan was unsuccessful, Don John and Borachio are trying to come up with another way to spoil Claudio and Hero's marriage.  They finally decide to stage a midnight meeting between Borachio and Margaret, who will wear Hero's clothes.  Don John will bring Claudio and Don Pedro to see this meeting.  The idea is that when Claudio sees this and becomes convinced that Hero is not a virgin, they will not marry.  They plan on carrying this out the night before the wedding.
While Benedick is sitting in the orchard, he overhears a staged conversation between Leonato, Don Pedro, and Claudio.  They talk about how Beatrice is in love with Benedick, but won't come and admit it to him.  The three say that she is too good for him, because he will be an awful man and spurn her.  Benedick resents being talked about like that, and decides that if she loves him, he will love her back.
Meanwhile, Hero is doing the same thing to Beatrice in the garden.  Hero sends Margaret to tell Beatrice that Hero and Ursula are talking about her.  Beatrice hides in the garden to listen to their conversation.  Hero tells Ursula that Benedick loves Beatrice, but that he should find someone else because B...
