Term Papers on KENYA
KENYA Kenya is on the East Coast of Africa. The equator also runs through the middle of Kenya. Kenya’s coastal area is a hot and humid tropical region. It has beautiful sandy beaches, lagoons, and swamps. It also has patches of rainforest that line the coast. Inland, vast plains stretch over about three fourths of Kenya. Its extremely dry climate and generally poor soil only support scattered plant life. But a highland in the southwest receives enough rainfall and has fertile soil to support extensive farming. Government Kenya has a republic. It adopted a Constitution in 1963 that granted its people the rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Kenyan citizens 18 years or older have the right to vote. In Kenya they have a president who is assisted by twenty cabinet ministers. The president serves terms that last up to five years at a time. People Kenya has a population of about 29 million people. Kenya is one of the fastest growing countries in the world, about three and one/fourth percent each year. About three/fourths of Kenyans live in rural areas. The other one /fourth live in the urban areas. Nairobi is Kenya’s largest city with about 1,162,000 people. 99% of Kenya is made up of black Africans. The other population groups in order of size, are Asian Indians, Europeans, British, and Arabs. Kenya’s black Africans belong to about 40 different ethnic groups. The largest is the Kikuyu, four others are the Kalejin, Kamba, Luhya, and Luo. Many people in Kenya speak Swahili. Most educated Kenyans also know English. Economics Most Kenyans live in small houses with thatched roofs and walls that are made out of mud on small farm settlements raising crops and livestock for a living. Some Kenyan farmers hold part time jobs for extra income. Some of the jobs that they work are blacksmiths, carpenters, shoemakers, tailors, or in other trades. Some go and work on large estates that have coffee and tea plantations. They rely on their livestock and crops for food most of the time. Some Kenyans move to the city and work for stores, factories, and businesses. \ Physical Characteristics Kenya has three distinct regions on its land. They are the tropical coastal area, a generally dry plain area, and a fertile highland. The coastal area is narrow strip of land along the Indian Ocean. The region has beautiful beaches, lagoons, mangrove swamps, cashew trees, coconut palms, and a few small rainforests. It is humid and hot all year round. The temperatures average about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It has about 40 inches of rain annually. A lot of the soil near the coast is fertile for farming, especially in the south. The plains of Kenya stretch inland from the coastal area and cover about three-fourths of the country. The plains form a series of plateaus, rising in elevation from near sea level to about 4,000 feet inland. Grasses, shrubs, and bushes grow on the plains. This region of land receives only about 10 to 30 inches of rain yearly. Temperatures average from 80 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit The highland is in southwestern Kenya. It covers a little less than one-fourth of the country. In this region it has mountains, valleys, and plateaus. Mt. Kenya, which is at the eastern end of the country, is the highest point in Kenya. It rises 17, 058 feet above sea level. Grasslands and forests cover much of the highland. This area of Kenya has by far the largest area of fertile grass in Kenya. Temperatures here average about 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Yearly Rainfall averages about 40 to 50 inches of rain each year. Current Events Recently Kenya has gone through a series of disease that have killed many people. There was a malaria epidemic that killed 143 people. There was also a cholera epidemic that killed 555 people because of the lack of medical attention. Kenya would have a lesser death rate because of disease if they would figure out a way to get rid of the mosquitoes and the dirty water. ... This is ONLY a preview of the article.
