Netscape’s Gecko
The Next-Generation Layout Engine

     This article begins by introducing the function of a layout engine. The article goes on to tell of some of the problems of the present day layout engine, one being the fact that they are too big. It states that the need for a powerful layout engine that could fit easily onto a portable device was a major reason why Netscape began developing its new layout engine -Gecko- back in 1997. This article examines the Gecko engine, explain how it works and talks about how the user might put Gecko to work in their own applications.
The development of the project Gecko is open sourced; meaning it is open to anyone to submit his or her ideas and strategies to develop the ultimate layout engine.

     The social context of the Article was to inform people that Netscape was introducing an open source layout engine, which was aimed at being the smallest yet the fastest layout engine today. The Gecko emphasizes standards, speed, size and source. It is expected to potentially be the fastest, smallest most standards compliant HTML layout engine available. Gecko features an intrinsic support for HTML 4.0, CSS1 and partially for CSS2, Resource Description framework, and even a full Document Object Model level-1 implementation. Gecko also supports both HTML and XML documents. Gecko has been developed entirely under the Open source model at Mozilla.org. Developers are free advantage of the Gecko source code.
