Jazz Jazz is the audible history of racial integration in America. As a musical style it is distinguished by it's emphasis upon improvisation, blues influenced tonality, and syncopated swing rhythm. Created originally by African Americans in the New Orleans area, jazz is an integration and synthesis of European and African ideas. Euro-American culture contributed concepts of sectional and different musical form, functional harmony, metric rhythm (4/4 meter), and brass instruments. Africa provided the example of different improvation over structure and brought different music which relates to jazz music. The earliest recording identified as jazz were made in 1917 in New York by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band under the leadership of Nick La Rocca.
