Term Papers on The Cold War
The Cold War April 20, 1999 I interviewed my father who answered the following ten questions about the Cold War. 1. What did you know about Fidel Castro before and after he took Cuba? Castro was the leader of a people's revolution which took Cuba away from the dictator Batista in 1959. Not much was reported in the news about him during his rebellion, but I do recall him appearing several times in the late 1950's on a popular late night talk show called the Jack Parr Show. Castro spoke very bad English and mostly spoke in Spanish, and was here to beg for money to support his revolution against the bad corrupt man Batista. It worked, he raised funds and defeated Batista in 1959. To our horror and surprise he immediately turned against the United States and supported Communism and became friends with Russia, our enemy. I recall during the months after Castro took power seeing on the TV news films of hundreds of people being shot because they did not support Castro and Communism. It was shocking to see and the U.S. did nothing to stop it. Castro has since controlled Cuba and relied for military and economic support from the Russians. In recent years, with the weakening of Russia and reduction of its support, Cuba has been on its own and has suffered bad economic conditions. Castro is old and I think when he is gone there will be a fight for power. The people will probably break out from under Communism like most other countries that followed Communism have already done. 2. What did you know of the Bay of Pigs when it occurred? Castro took over Cuba in 1959, turned Communist, and angered most Americans who had believed in and supported his revolution. We thought he was freeing those poor people from a bad dictatorship but he only made things worse for them under his own dictatorship. Many Cuban people escaped Castro and came to the United States and there were rumors in the news that some of these Cubans would try to retake Cuba and free it from Castro's harsh government. In 1961, while I was in high school, the news was filled with reports that a large force of Cuban Americans had landed in Cuba and were fighting to retake it. The news about their effort turned bad quickly and we were told that the force had been beaten by Castro, some had escaped, and most had been captured. The U.S. negotiated for the release of the prisoners and succeeded. Slowly, first from the soldiers who had escaped, then from the prisone... This is ONLY a preview of the article.
