Tragedy one way or Another

The tragic novel Black Boy by Richard Wright is about a young black boy growing up in the south in the mid 1900’s. The story is an Autobiography, which starts when the main character and author Richard is just a boy. From the very beginning of his life Richard had many problems and tragedies happen to him. Richard was a boy that was constantly beaten by family members; he had grown up without a father and hated the way he was treated by everyone. It wasn’t just his family that was mean to him, it was everyone around him especially the white boys and girls and men and women. His father left when he was very little, but didn’t help Richard much when he was there. For instance there was a time when Richard was little, and his Dad told him to kill a cat (Dad was only kidding of course) so Richard being the young uneducated kid he was toke the cat and hung it from a tree. Now if that is not an example of a tragedy I don’t know what is. Richard Wright’s goal his whole life was to get out of the south and escape to the north where he could live free and away from everything. He worked his way up as a young man, having many jobs and a lot of schooling and became an educated man. As a young adult his dream finally came true he moved to the north, and actually became a successful author. In the following essay you will hear numerous reasons why Black boy is in fact a tragedy. You will hear tragedies from when he was a kid right up to his adult age. The reader will get a few examples from every time period, then he/she will know what this book really is.
When Richard was only a kid he had many tragic things happen to him. For example, there was a time when he was very little he accidentally burned down his own house, and he was so afraid to face his parents he hid under the house while it was on fire. The fact that he would risk his life just so he wouldn’t get a beating is pretty tragic, that is one of many examples why this story should be considered a tragedy. Other tragic time in Richards young life was when his grandmother was washing him and she had to wash his backside and he told her she could kiss it when she was done. That was a terrible thing for Richard to do to his grandmother, but after that she told his mother and she chased him around the house trying to beat him. Richard eventually ran into his brothers room and hid under his bed where they couldn’t get him, once he was there they got his grandfather in there to get him out and he threaten Richard with a gun, but he didn’t come out. His mother gave him no dinner because he wouldn’t come out, but finally after hiding for many hours he came out in the middle of the morning because he was hungry, and his mother waiting, so she beat him. Those are bot...
