Gerontology

Gerontology is the study of old age, stressing the social and behavioral looks of aging.  Although aging is a lifelong process and changes in its effects on individual people, old age has been generally stated as beginning at the age of 65.  Since 1920 the number of people living to old age in society has increased greatly, (Encarta).

Students completing the Minor in Gerontology or the Gerontology Certificate program use their background to work wither directly in the field of aging or in other professional areas in which work with he older population will be a part of their lives.  The most apparent job in this field is the position of a physician.  After college, a student may also want a career in a nursing home, an assisted living facility, or even become a specialized nurse.  Direct providers work with people who are elderly and their families to assist them in making adjustments to the changes in personal, family, or social situations.  Program planning and evaluation specialists design, implement, and evaluate new approaches to meet the varied needs of older patients.

The main problem in geriatrics is how to keep these elderly people healthy and living longer.  There is no cause in this problem since old age is a part of life.  It is one thing in life we cannot control at all.  The possible solutions are for the doctors in the United States and world wide to find a way to keep the aged healthy and feeling better than ever.  If the doctors of the world actually find this way, the face of the globe would be lifted.  This field relates to Anatomy and Physiology because as we get older, our bodies seem to deteriorate and function less.  If the elders of our society could feel younger and keep healthy, it would give hope to our future generations.  Only we can find solutions to these problems of the aging process.    Hearing, eyesight loss, memory failure, and the chance of chronic disease are some of the health problems faced in gerontology.  For each individual, these losses are gradual and occur at different rates.  Many people don’t even realize these factors until they are in the stages of old age.  Overall, the health of older people is way better than those of the past generation partially due to modern day technology.  In many parts of the country, the cost of treating illnesses is helped by the aid of Medicare or other services of that kind.  One of the main goals to accomplish is to keep our elderly living longer and healthier lives.  That’s basically it- to have our elderly as long as we can.  This area will effect the future because if we find a breakthrough to live longer, we won’t have to worry about getting older and getting osteopenia and other body dysfunctions.  Once again, we are the only ones who can change the way we live our lives.

The second major problem with the aged is how to keep them economically stable.  Because so many of them are retired now, they don’t receive any income which makes it hard for them to be economy safe.  It is because of this lack of work ethic that over 20 percent of the elderly are living in poverty.  It is hard for the elderly to remain safe from economic peril and that is why many are falling into housing and other horrible problems.

One famous scientist in this field of study is Ignatz Leo Nascher, who lived from 1863 until his death in ...
