The Revenge Factor
The Revenge Factor Poe’s story “The Cask of Amontillado” is characterized by irony, and is filled with trickery, deception, and revenge to explain the psychology of the characters. The entire story is based on revenge and trickery. Not only does the main character want revenge, but he wants to enjoy it. The two characters in “The Cask of Amontillado” are Fortunato and Montresor. Fortunato is an eminently successful man. He enjoys the good things in life, is clever and has no scruples. Montresor tells us that regarding paintings and gems he is a complete quack. But he does pride himself on his connoisseurship of wines. He is not a man of taste or feeling, and has little regard for anything but the immediate facts of material existence (“The Cask” 2). Montresor like Poe, is a man of spirit. When he decides to take revenge, he enjoys every minute of it. He plans revenge as if he were creating a work of art. The story is told through the eyes of Montresor (“The Cask” 2). Montresor has been insulted by Fortunato and vows revenge. He decides to trick Fortunato in by telling him he has some wine to taste. Like a fool, Fortunato follows him down in his catacomb. When Montresor presented Fortunato with the wine, Fortunato raised it and said “I drink to the buried that repose around us (Poe 2).” Little did he know that he would soon join them. This ...
