Abstract

After seeing films like "Toy Story" and "A Bug's Life", I thought of how these people created all these computer animations and special graphics?  This question raised an interest to find out what technology is used and where else it can be used and how does it affect the society.

Electronic devices such as computers, which have been transformed from big mainframe computers in the 1960’s to small and fast home office machines, have created all these special effects.  I have an interest to research the technology such as Digital image processing which has increased by digital video special effects and video games.  This technology is increasing in a major step in the 1990s and has been to increase more in the future.

Furthermore this dissertation is an attempt to point out how Digital technology has affected the society such as businesses and home.

1.0     Introduction

Digital image processing, the manipulation of images by computer is a recent development emerging from image processing.  It has played an important role in the past and modern day society.  People have been using this image processing such as photographic cameras for a long time, but as time changes technology changes too.  In the 1970s there were large sized devices such mainframe computers, scanners, cameras, with limited use and expensive. Then came the invention of minicomputers, increased processor speeds, small in size, more facilities and less expensive. Even in the 1990s some off the image processing is based on the normal cameras, relying on the emulsion based film media.  As technology has changed so far we can get camera’s processing digital photography.  These cameras are known as Digital Cameras.  Where an image can be store onto a SIM (Small Integrated Memory) card and manipulated through computers.

Computers have made it possible to computerise and digitise images.  Everyone does not use this digital technology yet but it is emerging quickly into the businesses such as Graphics Designers, Advertisements, and Car sales companies and in the home such as computer games.   Digital technology's biggest advantage is that it creates images with formats that make it easy to transfer images between all kinds of devices and applications. For example, you can scan a document with text and images and you can use a photo-editing program to manipulate images to improve or alter them. You can crop them, remove redeye, change colours or contrast, and even add and delete elements, you can easily insert digital images into word processing documents, send them by e-mail to friends, or post them on Web sites.  Many people are using the technology of digital image processing for their social use as a hobby and also business use.  People who use this technology want the most out of it, to make their business more effective and faster.  Businesses use this technology to try to make less paper in the office (paperless office) to save more room, be more organised and improve on their costly, manual filing systems. This technology helps putting documents on CD for faster retrieval, increased control, cost reduction, safer storage, and space savings. An addition point is that if information is in paper format it can not be e-mailed unless it is scanned and transferred into an electronic format.

Many people such as designers think that this technology is advantageous, as graphics and animations can be easily created saving time on the computer. For example two posters are made one by paper and pencil, and the other by co...
