High School Spirit

Field Research Paper
Erin Collins

Two weeks ago, on October 9th, I travelled home for my high school's homecoming festivities and to my surprise nothing had changed.  The whole town was hyped up for that evening's homecoming game, and to find out who would be crowned homecoming King and Queen.
I parked up town that afternoon to view the homecoming parade, which would display all the floats that were constructed in the previous week by each of the classes and to find out who was up for King and Queen.  The parade concludes at the center of town, where the pep assembly begins.  The whole town was there, proving to me that nothing has changed and nothing will change; the town will always support the high school, and the town will especially support the high school students during homecoming week. While at the pep assembly, the senior class president announced who would represent the school as King and Queen and also who had won the award for best float.  For the first time in school history the freshman won the award for best float, and the rest of the classes went nuts.  In Polo, there is this feeling among the classes that the freshman are the, "scum of the earth," so to speak.

The next day is the Homecoming dance,  which everyone in the high school attends.  Polo's homecoming dance is a very formal event; all the kids go out to eat and then arrive at the dance where the King and Queen from the previous year crown this year's King and Queen.  The principal announces the rest of the court and parents take all their pictures; the dance resumes and the principle kicks out all the parents.
Homecoming in Polo is probably no different than any other small towns, but in Polo it is a time for all the old graduates and the present high school students to come together and retell old stories.
By doing my field research I found that no matter how large or small the high school, everyone has a similar form of school spirit.  My theory was that small schools are much more apt to have school spirit because of the small school atmosphere.  I was right o...
