What is Advertising? Advertising, according to Kleppner’s Advertising Procedure, is the process of disseminating information about a product, service, or an idea. It is also described as “persuasive communication” in our text. More specifically defined by Kleppner, advertising is “a message paid for by an identified sponsor and delivered thorough some medium of mass communication.” Through this definition, conclusions can be drawn on whether or not buying newspaper ads, new packaging, organizing a party for buyers, or customer surveys are included or excluded from advertising. According to Kleppner’s definition, buying a series of newspaper ads would be considered a part of advertising. These newspaper ads are messages paid for by a company and delivered through a newspaper, which is mass communication. Packaging of a product, on the other hand, is not solely a part of advertising, but is definitely a part of integrated marketing. Public relations is also separated from advertising.
