Some also fought in combat. In 1782 Deborah Sampson dressed in mens clothing, borrowed the name of her brother Robert, and joined the Continental Army. She knew she could fight as well as a man, but because she was a woman. permit her to join. Still, she fought in many battles and was wounded twice. Woman also had other jobs. With the men away on the battle field, many woman took on the responsibility of running the family farms and businesses. Other woman followed there husbands to the army camps. There they cooked sewed, carried ammunition, or served as nurses. Deborah Sampson wasent the only woman to fight in battle, Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley spent seven years at her husbands side in battle.
