Term Papers on Romanticism In The 19th Century
Romanticism in the 19th Century Gary Curtsinger Period 7 2-27-99 English 12 Romanticism start in through the 19th century. The movement from neoclassicism to romanticism flourished in England and France in this period of time. Romantic writers used nature for their inspiration, idealized the distant past, and celebrated the individual. Their writings were against neoclassicism which thought society was more important then the individual. Romanticism started kind of like a fad would; when Lyric Ballads was published other writers such as William Wordsworth and Sameul Taylor Coleridge. In “Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey” William Words worth uses some of these Romanticism elements in his poem. He wrote “These beauteous forms, Through a long absence, have not been to me As is a landscape to a blind man’s eye”. In this sentence he uses to of the characteristics; he talks about the beauty of the forest and the absence of it to him. So he is admiring nature and reminiscing simultaneously. Another one where he admires the nature, “The sounding cataract Haunted me like a passion; the tall rock, The mountain, and the deep and gloomy wood, Their colors and their forms, were then to me An appetite;”. Also evidence of Romanticism is when he says “In which the burthen of the mystery, In which the heavy and the wary weight Of all this unintelligible world”. This poem is about when the writer used to play in Tintern Abbey, obviously a forest nearby there and played in it when he was young. Now he comes back for different reasons. He escapes the world which is individualism and goes to the forest to get away from all the burden, this part it nature. Then he tells his young sister that she can always come here to get away from her problems as well. “I Wandered Lonely as a cloud” to me is an imaginative poem. He talks about being a cloud, “I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high over vales and hills”. Again he talks about nature in this Poem. He talks about beauty in nature in this poem as in his others; “ And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils. This story is about how the writer lays down and imagines that he is a cloud floating over a lake looking down at some daffodils fluttering in the wind. William Wordsworth uses Imagery such as Landscapes, lakes, rivers, and oceans, and forests. His favorites things to write about seem to be forests and he likes to put some kind of ocean or lake in his poems. He also mentions his sister some in his poems. Sameul Taylor Coleridge was William Wordsworth friend and wrote Kubla Khan. In Kubla Khan Sameuel Coleridge was using a narcotic at the time. His poem goes from peaceful to a frightening mood to and kind of a mix of the two in a span of three different stanza’s. His drug induced poem shows nature as one of the elements in his poem, “Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to sunless sea”. Another one about nature, “Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And her... This is ONLY a preview of the article.
