Term Papers on Television
Television Forty percent of America’s youth live in single-parent homes that one parent is absent for a significant part of their son’s or daughters developmental years. Children are naive and gullible which prohibits children to discriminate between television’s virtual reality and their natural surroundings. Parental involvement is crucial in educating children of and about the difference between the virtual reality of television and the actuality of life. Nonetheless, an increasing number of families find paying attention to their children arduous, and thus the children lack support. In place of this support children turn to television to succumb their needs of entertainment and belonging. There are many hypotheses that television can be harmful to children’s attention span or makes children less resourceful, but these are myths. Television, if used correctly can be a tool of education for children in the developmental years. Responsible parental involvement- establishing content and time restrictions as well as co-viewing and discussing media messages- establishes the family context within which television can provide a rich source of entertainment while learning For many people, television is a large part of daily life. Often television is misused in families in many ways: as a time-filler (“You have nothing to do? Go watch TV.”), tranquilizer (“When the kids come home from school they’re so keyed up that they need to watch for a while to simmer down.”), a problem solver (“Kids, stop fighting. It’s time for your program.”), a procrastination device (“I’ll just watch one more program before I do my homework.”), a punishment (“If you don’t stop teasing your little sister, no TV for a week.”), and a reward (“If you get an A on your composition you can watch an extra hour of TV.”). In these ways television is disastrous, but it can be changed easily. The content of what the child views is important to the educational growth of that child. There are a precious few genuine educational innovations in our country, and “Sesame Street” is one of them. The series’ research clearly supports its effectiveness: “ ‘Sesame Street’ boasts votes of approval from the 16 million children who watch the show each week, as well as their parents, who witness their children learning from the Muppets, the music, the animation, and the characters treating each of the respect and good humor”(Chen 31). “Sesame Street” teach children how to count, play games, and make friends as well as many other activities. “Sesame Street”, however, can not do all the work. Many times children will have question concerning the television show. Parents should watch any and every show with their children to help explain, clarify, and answer any questions the child may have. With the advancement of technology and the increasing amount of televisions in the home it has become difficult for parents to view every television presentation with their child. In a recent survey in UCLA's Communication 10 lecture, it was reported over 85 percent of the students had multiple televisions in their household. 50 percent had over four television sets, and one student's household possessed ten television sets. Obviously one or two parents cannot be in four places at one time. Is a television set in every room, including the child's, necessary? No, a child with the opportunity to observe a television episode whenever he or she desires is destructive. A child will always choose television over the more pertinent task of homework. Households must limit themselves to a certain number of essential television units to prohibit the harmful effects that television can have on children. Once small children become able to concentrate on television and make some sense of it, which is usually around two years of age, it is understandable why children often receive messages of immorality or which break mores which they perceive as truthful. 20/20 recently did a report on the World Wrestling Federation and the social effect it has on America and especially on c...
