Speech Essay

Welcome all. Welcome not only to the familiar faces I've seen in the halls- our class of 1999, Ms. Williams, Mrs. Sachs, and Father Waris- but to the friends, relatives, and family that have joined to celebrate from miles way. It is truly heart warming to see so many join us in a celebration of our accomplishments and achievements. As we open a new chapter in our lives, we cannot be swept away in the excitement of a new high school with new faces without reflecting on things that have helped us today. Things that we could not be here without- the teachers and mentors who have guided as through St. Peter's. Things have sped by so quickly.
     I used to idolize the eighth graders with their lockers and many books, and now I speak for them.  I am honored today to be a spokesperson for such a wide range of faces, talents, and abilities. It is a priveledge to speak on behalf of these students. I am one of many who will graduate today honoring and cherishing the memories they have had here at St. Peter's. I believe I speak for all of us when I say, I will miss it very much.
     St. Peter's has been an educational experience for me. It was not only in the academics, though I will say I don't think I will ever forget quizzing other students on science or reciting my speeches to teachers in the hallway. It has also been educational meeting such a broad range of people. People of all different backgrounds. People with stories to offer and jokes to be told. People who have helped make my experience at St. Peter's memorable. It is with these same people that I have made friends, helping each other with school work and going to each others' houses after schools, to study or just pretend we were. It is with these people that I have told jokes and played gags, people whose cheerful laughter will forever remind me of the innocence of youth. It is not only with students though. The laughter and fun times are experiences that we all can share, including teachers, no matter how mean or scary they may seem to us when we are young.
     I have learned to recognize people for their own individual talents- to overcome jealousy, to overcome our differences. We have all been united. I have shed the same tears as they have and laughed with them at the same jokes. We have all struggled together, through hard times and sharing smiles in the better times. We all felt the shock of the Oklahoma City. We felt the sorrow of Princess Di's death. We are the Millenium generation.
     We have been the first class to break down the barriers. In our school, there is no 'stupid', no 'smart', no 'black', no 'white', no 'popular', no 'loser'. We are all children in the eyes of God. Our class has been one of many backgrounds- economic, racial, and social. We do not have a hierarchy. We are all one in the same, students with a common goal: to learn. But in learning, we also teach. We teach others what we know and in turn, learn what they have to offer.
     We have always been kids at heart ready for fun, but also determined to learn. We remember times in first grade- teddy bear picnics and adding two digit numbers. The fun and smiles that were in every lesson were the roots of our education.
     We remember second grade: Who can forget practicing for our first communion with Mrs. Edwards with Cheerios as the host. The celebration of the Eucharist is a memory that will never be forgotten.
     We remember third grade: centers, reading, and multiplication. How incredible it seems that only a few short years ago we were reciting flashcards with our parents or struggling over compound words. We may have felt like the year would never end, but we were growing in leaps and bounds.
     We remember fourth grade: The never-ending hope for Jolly Ranchers from Mrs. Klein was ever present amongst everyone. Who can forget the end of the year parties in Mrs. Klein’s room or the time when she wrote on the wall or the Science unit dealing with magnets with Mrs. Gregory.
     We remember fifth grade: Times of giggling and gossiping, but we never let it interfere with our work. W...
