Intro. to Liter.

In many people's life there is somehow a tragic hero that is doing
the right thing for the best cause.  Aristole defines a tragic hero as a character of great reputation
and prosperity whose misfortune is not due to depravity or vice, for the hero is a virtuous man or
woman but to an error in judgement resulting from a tragic flaw. In Julius Caesar, a play written by
William Shakespeare, Marcus Brutus is best represented as the tragic hero as defined byAristole.
Ancestry and high respectability give Brutus his greatly respected reputation. For example
"where many of the best respect in Rome.  Expect immortal Caesar, speaking of Brutus.  And
groaning underneath this age's yoke.  Have wished that noble Brutus had his eyes"(1,2,59-61)
Cassius is saying that the people think Brutus is highly respected. Cassius also said, "There was a
Brutus once that would have brooked the eternal devil to keep his state in Rome as easily as a
king"(1,2,159-161).  Cassius was saying that his ancestors would never let any king come to
power.  So he's making him feel he has to live up to his ancestors.  Through the quotes Cassius is
saying that Brutus is highly respected and by his ancestory he can't allow a king to govern.
Success and friendship are the reasons Brutus has much prosperity.  Cassius tells Brutus
"And look you lay it in the praetor's chair"(1,3,143).  Cassius is saying that Brutus is highly ranked
and he's a judge or magistrate for Rome  This means he is very successful and is above many
people.  Brutus says "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more"(3,2,21)  He's saying
that Caesar was a good friend but he had to do what he had to do.
Its with all thats been said his prosperity was shown by his successful job and his dear friendship
to Caesar.
Moral excellence and goodness is why Brutus has so much virtue in his life. Anthony is
talking about Brutus after he dies saying" This was the noblest roman of them all. All the
conspirators save only he, did that they did in envy of Great Caesar; He,only in hate general

honest thought, and common good to all made one of them. His life was gentle and the elements so
mixed in him that nature might stand up and say to all the world "This was a man"" (5,5,68-75).
Anthony is saying that Brutus was the no...
