Running Wild
Thomas J. Dygard
Running Wild is a book about a student at Cartwright High named Pete
Holman. Pete Holman has been in and out of trouble for most of his high school
years. He is a trouble maker he cuts classes, picks fights, and smokes in the boiler
room during school.
One Saturday night when he was out joyriding with his best friends Jimbo
and Bucky they sideswiped a car. Pete lands in the police station that night. Then
officer Stowell made him an offer. The offer was he could spend the night in jail
and his mom would find out what he did or he could try out for the school football
team and his mom wouldn't find out. He chose to try out for the football team.
The first day at practice was really hard and he considered quitting. As days
past practice got easier. He stopped smoking and drinking because he wouldn't be
able to breath when he ran because of smoking.
On the day of his first game he was really nervous because he hadn't even
been to a football game before to watch it much less to play in it. When he and his
friends went to games they would take shots of vodka under the bleachers. On his
first run he ran the ball for a fifteen yard gain and on his second run he ran the ball
for a touchdown. In the second half he ran the ball for another touchdown and at
the end of the game he had two touchdowns and had ran the ball for 110 yards.
