THE TAIPING REBELLION

     The Taiping Rebellion occurred in the nineteenth century and was one of the most destructive civil disturbances in recorded history.  The rebellion lasted thirteen years, from 1851 to 1864 and spread to seventeen provinces which cause twenty to thirty million deaths.  The main reason for the Taipings rebellion was that they wanted to take over the Ching Dynasty and establish their own militant brand of Christiananity.

     The leader of the Taiping movement was a frustrated scholar named Hung Hsui-ch'uan, a Hakka from the Kwangtung province.  After repeatedly failing the civil service examinations, Hung fell ill and had visions of entering heaven.  By 1843 through Christian tracts he had picked up in Canton, Hung came to believe that he was a son of God and the younger brother of Jesus, and that he was destined to play a messianic role in history.  With a few converts, he moved to Kwangtung province, where his followers founded the God Worshipers Society in 184...
