The Dead Poet's Society
The critical lens states that most readers of a book experience the same things that happen in the story, in their actual life. The critical lens is basically trying to inform everyone that the most important themes and issues in movies such as “Dead Poet’s Society” match the most important themes and issues in our lives. Many people do not realize it, but certain movies portray a view of life that people go through everyday. The issues and actions that people feel in movies go on everyday in people’s houses. Many people have problems just like actors in movies. Life will always be the way it is, and people will always have conflicts on certain issues.
In Dead Poet’s Society, Neil was the character who experienced the most problems and issues. Neil was always in a conflict with his father about what academic classes he is going to take up in school. Neil wanted to be an actor, but his father refused to let him become one because he felt acting was a waste of time and would not lead Neil to a good future. Mr. Perry, Neil’s dad, wanted him to go to Harvard and become a doctor. Neil was absolutely pressured by his dad and always did what he said.
But Neil’s other friends weren’t pressured by their parents, the administration of Whelton were the ones who pressured them. Whelton was a school of too many disciplinary rules. The kids felt like they were pressured into doing whatever was under the commands of the administration no matter what it was.
I am sure that in many peoples’ lives they go through many problems such as the one Neil is currently facing with his dad. There will always be disagreements between families and friends so don’t try to prevent it because you can’t.
