Animal Research
Animal research takes place everyday to improve human life. Scientists conduct tests on animals so the people of the world can live a better life; some of these test hurt the animals and sometimes the animal doesn't get hurt, but no matter what happens to the animal, the research was worth it. If the tested animals are put to use in a way that the human life is going to benefit, then the scientist has done his job. Scientists that conduct these tests are qualified doctors who have studied animals and know how to test the animal in a humane way.
To do animal research you have to be a qualified scientist, not just anyone is allowed to conduct tests on animals. Regulations on experimentations make it so animals are kept safe and are treated humanely. The U.S. Animal Welfare Act for example, requires scientist to provide adequate food and shelter for certain kinds of laboratory animals (Rowen, World Book Encyclopedia). Another way research can be done humane is with the new advances of anesthetic technique and in neurophysiology (Kuperman, Encyclopedia Americana). Committees such as Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), were created so scientists conduct humane research on animals. The IACUC is a committee with many qualified doctors in their profession, these people make it their job to protect animals and make sure that the scientist working on the animals are doing their best to take care of the animals they are testing. IACUC not only makes sure the scientist are conducting research and taking care of the animals the right way, they also reward the scientist who do it the best. With the awards, it makes the scientist want to be the best, encouraging humane research. The IACUC reviews all the plans for research before it is done to make sure the scientists are using the animal for beneficial reasons.
Agencies everywhere are trying to do their part in taking care of tested animals. University of Kansas, in Lawrence supports and conducts humane animal use, where no acceptable alternative exists. The teaching and research mission of the University cannot be pursued effectively without the use of living, nonhuman species. The University has a committee that watches over scientists to make sure they are taking well care of animals and are experimenting on the animals for a good cause, such as looking for cures and testing products so humans can use them without harm. Making it so scientists are using animals for good causes and helping improve the human life (www.ukans.edu/~acu/mission.html). The scientists at the University want the animals treated properly. Because of this, they have been recognized by AAALAC. The Animal Care Unit Director is a doctor of veterinary medicine and is board certified in laboratory animal medicine. He is just one of many qualified doctors in the University (www.ukans.edu/~acu/mission.html). If doctors take the resp...Read entire document
