The Battle of Gettysburg U.S. History 3rd January 19, 1999 The Battle of Gettysburg began on July 1, 1863 and ended on July 3, 1863. The Battle of Gettysburg marked the last major invasion of the North by the Confederates. This destroyed their offensive strategy and forced them to fight a defensive war. The Union’s "Army of the Potomac" was under General Meade’s command, and consisted of 85,000 troops. The Confederate army, under General Robert E. Lee’s command, consisted of 75,000 men. General Lee was formulating a plan to invade Pennsylvania. In pursuit of his plan, Lee crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains, crossed Maryland and entered Pennsylvania. Upon learning other federal troops were north of the Potomac army, Lee decided to concentrate his whole army at Gettysburg. On June 30, some confederate troops noted that Meade had moved down to intercept the Confederate army. The battle began on July 1, outside of Gettysburg with a encounter between General Hills (who controlled a corp. of Lee’s army) advanced brigades and the Federal Cavalry supported by infantry. Hill encountered great resistance and the fighting was uneven until Ewell, another of Lee’s generals, arrived from the north in the afternoon. The Confederates pushed and forced the federal troops to retire from their positions and move to Culp’s Hill and Cemetery Ridge, southeast of Gettysburg. On that day the fighting was heavy on both sides but in the end the Union suffered the most losses. More than 4000 troops were taken prisoners by the Confederates and federal Reynolds was killed. On July 2, Meade formed his forces in a shape of a horseshoe, extending westward from Culp’s Hill and southward along Cemetery Ridge to the hills of Little Round Top and Round Top.
