Creative Writing
Bob
Bob had never been exposed to outside life. In fact, he lived on a small remote island, deep in the Ocean off the coast of South America. He had been pampered as a child, destined to one day become King and rule all that was around him, Bob had been fed only the finest, most refined foods, and had never seen the tragic elements of life that plagued the world around him. Bob had been taught to be indifferent, not to stand out in any way, and to conform to the general thought of those around him. Bob did stand out however, for he could never quench his boundless curiosity. He was one of those people that always wanted to know “Why?” and this was what called him to begin his journey.
When Bob was still young, in his mid-twenties, he still had never ventured out from the “protected vicinity” to which he was confined to. For a long time Bob had wanted to visit the outside world. But could never figure out a way to escape. Yet one day, Bob had come up with a plan He pretended to be very ill, convulsing and hyperventilating, and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he would be given treatment But Bob had other plans, as soon as he was placed in his room, he snuck out the door, looked down the hall, and darted out the main entrance.
When he first stepped outside, into the city, he was amazed at what he saw, trees that seemed to touch the sky, huge skyscrapers, yet most of all he was amazed by the hundreds of cars, traveling swiftly by him. After the first encounter he thought to himself, “Why was I not exposed to this before?” But as he walked down the streets and took his first “real look” at the outside world, he found out why.
As he walked down the street, he saw ragged haired men begging for money at every corner, he saw smoke pouring out of the tops of huge buildings, but neither of those bothered him as much as what he saw next: A black man.
