AP U.S. History D.B.Q.

Corey Williams
Period 1
AP US History

1.) " From 1781 to 1789, the Articles of Confederation provided the United States with aneffective government." Using the documents and your knowledge of the period, evaluate this statement.

From the year 1781 to 1789, I am easily convinced that the Articles of

Confederation did not provide the United States with an effective and productive

government. After reviewing the documents and applying learned knowledge, there was

strong and clear mathematical, social, economical, and political evidence to suppor my

statement.

In mathematical terms, according to Document B , as the population grew pre-

American Revolutionary war in the United States, so did its estimated market value of

U.S. exports to Great Britain, with the exception being the years 1772-1774, when

population growth was extremely slow. After the war, the U.S. economy was unsteady

with the adoption of the Articles. For example, even after a quite substantial population

growth in 1786 from 1785, the market value dropped about $775.00. Small change

considering todays market, but back then, Congress as well as the American economy

needed every penny it could get to repay war debts, etc.. In the year 1775, when America

was still under British supervision and rule, the market was at its peak. And we all know

what happened in 1776. The market took a nose dive once under American control. That

proves that the American leaders initially did not have a clue on how to run a successful

country with the rules, jurisdictions, and policies of the Articles of Confederation.

The United States obviously did not have " social security " either under the

Articles. Social outbreaks such as Shay's Rebellion are crucial in supporting my theme. In

Document C, " .... Every class of public creditors must know the inability of Congress to

pay ( bonuses and back pay for the veterans of the Revolutionay war ) thier demands,

unless furnished with the means by the several States, and the exertions of the body have

not been ( lacking ) to obtain th...
