Barium

The element barium(Ba)  is found in the bottom left corner of the periodic table and is in the Alkaline earth metal family and group number two. It is element number fifty-six and has an atomic weight of 137.327.  It is in period six.  Barium is surrounded on the periodic table by (from bottom left corner left to right)  Francium, Radium, Actinium, Lanthanum, Yttrium, Strontium, Rubidium, and Cesium.


     
     

     
     Barium is solid at room temperature and has a melting point of 1000 K (725.0 C) and a boiling point of 2143 K (1140.0 C).  It is a soft, silvery white color and has a mineral hardness of 1.25.  It's flame test color is green.
     In 1774 Karl Scheele discovered minerals containing barium. Yet the actual barium element was not discovered until 1808 by Humphrey Davy.  The word barium was derived from the Greek word "barys" meaning heavy.  It is found in nature only in compounds.  People have very little barium in the body naturally. As a 108 lb. woman, I would have .0147096 grams of barium in my whole body. Many widely used compounds of barium provide everyday products for us.  Barium chloride is said by the British Pharmaceutical codex to have a stimulant action on the heart and muscles. Some rat poisons are derived from barium carbonate.  Barium chromate is used in the making of safety matches and paint, and barium dioxide is used in the making of  hydrogen peroxide, which is used by many ordinary people and also doctors to cleanse scrapes and minor abrasions. Barium sulphide is used as a depilatory to remove hairs, and luminous paint which is largely produced and marketed in the way of glow in the dark stars, planets, and other fun toys for young people.
