In Stephenson’s short story both Leiningen’s and the ant’s armies depict examples of well-disciplined conflict. Encarta World English Dictionary states that well disciplined means: showing orderliness and control in the way something is done or somebody behaves. Leiningen’s army shows that they are well-disciplined by the way that they do what Leinigen told them to do with no hesitation and without question.

“ Near Leiningen a few mounted herdsman awaited his order”, not only did Leiningen’s army do what they were asked they were awaiting his orders. This shows the discipline the army had by always being ready. Of the three men who were mounted Leiningen told one of them to go to the weir with specific directions, one of them to go bring spades and petrol sprinklers. Leinigen did not have to be at a specific place to make sure everything went as he wanted it to. When he told the rider to tell the man at the weir to lower and then raise the flow of the water it was done without his supervision. As important as the first reason proving that Leinigen’s army is well disciplined is that they stood their ground while being attacked and did not go into a state of chaos.
