In the play ‘Blood Brothers’, what techniques does Willy Russell use to attract and maintain the audiences interest?  Further to your comments, explain how, given the opportunity, you would direct, Act five Scene five.

Willy Russell was born just outside Liverpool.  His father owned a chip shop and his mother worked in a warehouse.  At school he was a failure but during English silent reading lessons he realized he wanted to be a writer.  He left school with only one O level in English Language to work for six years as a hairdresser.  He then took English Literature as an evening class and went to college for a year, eventually becoming a writer.

Willy Russell’s aim was to bring the theatre to the people.  Not just the rich but the working class and all who enjoy the theatre.  The play Blood Brothers was about the working class and may have something to do with his own growing up and childhood experiences.  He wanted to change the theatre so that the working class could enjoy it.  So, the play Blood Brothers was about the problems of a working class family so that they could relate to the story and help them to understand and enjoy it more. This adds to his idea of bringing theatre to the people.

Blood Brothers is a very easy play to stage.  This is because the stage is a square in the centre of the audience.  This is interesting to the audience as they surround the play and the actors actually interact with audience.  There are also relatively few props used and some actors take the role of more than one character.  This makes it easier for the audience to follow as there are fewer characters.

Willy Russell uses many different techniques to make keep the audience interested in the play and to keep them excited. Ancient Greek tragedy, dramatic devices and dramatic irony are three of these.

          Ancient Greek tragedy is a drama in which central characters suffer a misfortune.  In Blood Brothers lots of characters suffer a misfortune, such as Mickey, when he can’t find a job, Linda when Mickey goes mad and Mrs Johnson when she haves to give away Eddy.  This keeps the audiences attention as although misfortune is not nice it is interesting to watch.  To see people happily getting on with their lives is not very entertaining.  This helps Willy Russell’s aim of bringing the theatre to the people as ancient Greek tragedy is interesting to watch.
